Slightly larger than the outgoing model, the latest 5 Series Touring brings increased space of 570 litres rising to 1,700 litres – up 10 and 30 litres respectively. It also offers an increased payload of 730kg – up 120kg. The 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrest can be lowered at the touch of a button and the boot cover and partition net can be stored in cubbies under the boot floor. The 5 Series Touring also brings separately-opening rear window and automatic tailgate operation as part of its standard specification.

Despite its increased dimensions, the new model weighs up to 100kg less, helping to lead to a reduction of up to 11% in fuel consumption.

The launch engine line-up will bring four units, covering two diesels and petrols. The 520d features a 190hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit offering 110g/km and combined fuel consumption of 4.7l/100km. The 265hp 530d uses a 3.0-litre straight six and is available with xDrive as an option.

Petrols include the 252hp 530i and 340hp 540i XDrive.

Other variants will follow during the course of the year, teaming up with conventional rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Standard equipment includes self-levelling air suspension at the rear, while Dynamic Damper Control, the Adaptive Drive system with active body roll stabilisation, Integral Active Steering – which is now also available in conjunction with xDrive – and M Sport suspension can be specified as options.

Onboard tech includes a touchscreen monitor and BMW gesture control, and new assistance systems such as steering and lane control assistant. Remote Control Parking is also available as is the On-Street Parking Information service.
