BMW is to run a scrappage scheme targeting diesel-powered Euro-4 and older vehicles from any brand in the UK as the VW Group says it’s also looking at a scheme.

BMW’s Lower Emissions Allowance provides a trade-in discount of £2,000 on all new BMW and MINI vehicles with emissions of 130g/km and below.

The announcement follows the news last week of a similar scheme in Germany, agreed at a Diesel Forum meeting by German government officials and the country’s car industry that also saw BMW, along with Daimler, Opel and Volkswagen, agree to offer free NOx-reducing software updates for cars in Germany.

BMW said its UK scrappage scheme will offer an additional £2,000 – dubbed a ‘Lower Emissions Allowance’ – off all new BMW and MINI vehicles with emissions of 130g/km or less, including lower-emission Euro 6 petrol and diesel models as well as electric and plug-in cars, such as the i3, i8, all BMW i Performance models and MINI Countryman PHEV.

Of key note is the fact that prospective customers can qualify for the scheme by trading in a diesel-powered Euro-4 standard or older vehicle from any brand – not just BMW or MINIs.

Meanwhile a Volkswagen spokesperson said: “We’re at an early stage at the moment but each of the Volkswagen Group UK brands will be considering the benefits of such a scheme in the UK.”
