New Citroën C5 Aircross to debut PHEV AWD tech

Citroën has revealed its Qashqai-rivalling C5 Aircross SUV, which will join the range in 2018 complete with a PHEV AWD model.

C5 Aircross features the Plug-In Hybrid PHEV e-AWD drivetrain.

Built on PSA’s EMP2 platform and providing a replacement to the C5 saloon axed last year, the new model follows on from the Aircross Concept unveiled in 2015 and will introduce a new suspension system that uses Progressive Hydraulic Cushions with to bring significant improvements in ride comfort.

The C5 Aircross will also be marked out as the first Citroën vehicle to feature the Plug-In Hybrid PHEV e-AWD drivetrain, which combines a 200hp petrol engine and two electric motors, with a total output of 300hp. In all electric mode this will have a range up to 37 miles and will also offer hybrid, combined and 4×4 functions.

Citroën has also announced 165 and 200hp petrol engines with the EAT6 e-shift automatic gearbox and the European line-up is also likely to include two and four-wheel drive diesels.

Design features include a floating roof, panoramic sun roof, black windscreen pillars, 17, 18 or 19-inch wheels and a range of personalisation options.

The boot employs a two-level floor design along with practical features including an foot-operated tailgate and space starting from 482 litres.

Onboard tech includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch HD touchscreen, as well as wireless inductive charging for smartphones. Driver assistance features Active Safety Brake, Active Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop Function along with Grip Control and Hill Assist Descent Control.

The C5 Aircross launches in China in the second half of this year and in Europe in 2018.
