The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter range will now also offer FWD with an electric version due next year.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its third-generation Sprinter, which introduces front-wheel drive and new connectivity options as well as an electric version from 2019.

Billed as the first end-to-end system solution for commercial fleets, the new Sprinter builds on Mercedes-Benz Vans’ work to reposition as a “provider of integral transport and mobility solutions” and brings eight packages available with central fleet, vehicle, driver and location-based services to aid fleet management following the launch of the ‘Mercedes PRO Adapter’ retrofit solution.

Other changes see the launch of a new front-wheel drive system alongside the existing rear and all-wheel drive variants, which brings an extra 50kg payload compared to rear-wheel drive. The front-wheel drive versions also introduce a new nine-speed auto and six-speed manual.

Engine line-up, depending on market, includes the 190hp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel along with a 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel which offers 114hp, 143hp or 163hp in rear-wheel drive and 114hp, 143 and 177hp in front-wheel drive, with the latter unit only available for the camper van.  In the USA and Canada the engine range also gets a petrol unit with nine-speed auto.

Combined fuel consumption figures of the new Sprinter vary between 6.9 to 9.7l/100km with CO2 of 181-253g/km.

The new model will also introduce an electric eSprinter variant from next year.

All models also get an 80mm reduction in the height of the loading sill to aid loading while the new model also introduces a variable stowage concept. Meanwhile cabin updates bring ergonomically shaped seats, keyless start and an improved air conditioning system.

Safety features on offer include a self-cleaning reversing camera showing its image in the rear-view mirror, a parking package with a 360-degree view, and a rain sensor with an integrated Wet Wiper system.
