Over 800 lives could be saved a year using video-based driver safety technology

Commissioned by Lytx Europe Ltd (formerly DriveCam Europe Ltd.), the study of heavy truck and bus collisions conducted by The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) found that Lytx’s video-based driver safety programme has the potential to dramatically save lives and reduce injuries.

The study concluded that heavy goods vehicles and buses using the DriveCam powered by Lytx Programme could significantly reduce fatalities, collisions and injuries in the US.

The study demonstrates that the Lytx driver safety programme, fuelled by data captured from multiple technologies and sensors combined with regular driver review and coaching, can help to identify risky driving behaviours and support drivers making them safer on the road every day.

‘If driver behaviour is the primary reason for traffic crashes, then approaches that pinpoint and focus on reducing risky driving behaviour are likely to be the most effective in reducing crashes,’ said Dr Jeffrey Hickman of Virginia Tech Transportation Institute in the study. ‘Motor vehicle crashes are often predictable and preventable.  Yet, many drivers choose to behave in ways that put themselves and others at risk for a vehicle crash and/or serious injuries. The most efficacious onboard safety monitoring systems use in-vehicle video technology to gather driving behaviours that can be addressed and corrected, thereby reducing future crash risk.’
