Toyota recalls around 295,000 vehicles

The carmaker has filed documents with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to say it is recalling around 57,000 Lexus RX350 crossover vehicles and 109,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, both from model years 2012 and 2013, as well as around 129,000 Toyota RAV4s from model year 2012.

The problem is due to an electrical component in the brake actuator, which adjusts fluid pressure in each wheel cylinder and which may experience increased resistance.

That could lead to reduced vehicle control and an increased risk of a crash as various safety systems, including traction control, become inoperative.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, said a Toyota spokesman.

In the United States, the recall applies 54,010 RX350 crossovers, 100,052 Tacoma trucks and 107,052 RAV4 SUVs, according to the NHTSA documents, which also say that Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software for the skid control electronic unit free of charge.

The latest news comes on the back of a recall announced earlier this week of all 1.9 million of the third-generation Prius cars sold globally, due to a potential software issue with the boost converter in the hybrid system, and follows a series of mass recalls in recent years that have hit at the carmaker’s reputation for quality.
