2014 TISPOL Conference to focus on “Road Safety in Europe – Achieving 2020 Target”
Taking place at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport in the UK on Tuesday 30th September and Wednesday 1stOctober this year, the conference boasts a speaker line-up including top-level representatives of the European Commission, Euro Contrôle Route, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and academic researchers from the UK, Norway, Ireland, Finland and Germany. Additionally, TISPOL President Koen Ricour and other representatives will also be sharing their expertise.
The conference will be chaired by Rob Gifford, Director of the Gifford Partnership and formerly of the UK's Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).
The first guest presentation will be given by Siobhan O'Brien from Ireland. A collision left Siobhan with a head injury and two broken leg bones, as well as a punctured lung. Siobhan will talk about what it has meant to live with a serious injury following her crash.
Other conference sessions will include: Post Crash Response – Serious Injuries; Fit To Drive, including Measuring driver fatigue; Distraction, including a talk on Driven to distraction by Julie Townsend of road safety charity BRAKE; and Advances in Safety, including an overview of the new “smart” tachograph by Gerard Schipper, Euro Contrôle Route.
Following on from the success of the 2013 Conference, organisers have commissioned another suite of short video presentations to complement this year's speaker programme. Topics include autonomous self-driving cars, difficult conversations with senior drivers, alternatives to prosecution for young offending drivers and fast-track medical licence revocations.
TISPOL director Pasi Kemppainen commented: ‘Police services must continue to find ways of making reduced budgets stretch further in all areas of their operations, including policing the roads. Additionally, road safety professionals across Europe also want good, evidence-based examples of cost-effective solutions as they continue the journey towards that tough target of halving the number of people killed on Europe's roads by 2020.
‘As ever, we intend this year's programme to be as practical and useful as possible, by showcasing examples of good practice and how they have successfully been adapted to work elsewhere. Our line-up of speakers and the TISPOL representatives from across Europe are committed to sharing their success stories and ensuring the Conference outputs are both practical and useful.’
He added: ‘At TISPOL, we are playing our part to offer continued excellent value for delegates. We are therefore very pleased once again to have avoided any increase in the cost of participating in or exhibiting at the Conference. This means that there has been no rise in delegate or exhibitor costs for seven years.’
