In France, the Mini Cooper and Fiat 500 EV rival will be priced at €25,000 (around £21,400), putting it on a par with B-segment hybrids. Prices for the UK, where it’s due in Q1 2025, haven’t been announced yet.

It will be the first Renault Group vehicle built on the new AmpR Small platform – formerly CMF-B EV – sitting some 3.92m long and with multi-link rear suspension, normally used on vehicles further up the market, bringing benefits to ride and handling.

It’s designed as a small, nimble city car that’s “more compact than it looks” and is some 9cm shorter than the Clio, while sitting 6cm higher. Boot space stands at 326 litres (277 dm3 VDA) while the cabin has a further 19 litres of storage capacity, which can even be customised with 3D-printed accessories, such as a baguette holder.

The line-up for individual markets is yet to be confirmed but across Europe there will be a choice of a 40kWh battery paired with an 120hp motor and a 52kWh battery with a 150hp motor. The 40kWh battery will deliver around 186 miles of range, rising to 248 for the larger pack. Performance for the 150hp motor stands at 0 to 62 mph in under 8 seconds.

The entry-level motor will be able to charge at up 80kW DC, rising to 100kW DC for the larger motor, giving a 15-80% charge in 30 minutes. Both can charge at 11kW AC bidirectional, a first for Renault and enabling drivers to use their cars to power the grid and benefit from lower energy bills.

Drivers can also use V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality to power up devices, such as an electric barbecue, direct from the vehicle battery, as already seen on Kia and Hyundai models. A heat pump will help keep drivers warm, while saving as much energy as possible from the battery.

Design pays home to the original Renault 5 and replicates many features from the concept. The 5 E-Tech electric comes with a lighting signature with “cheeky” welcome and goodbye sequences and standout colour options that include Pop Yellow and Pop Green, inspired by the 1970s model.

Three trim levels available at launch: Evolution, Techno and the range-topping Iconic Five.

Inside, the designs have been inspired by the R5 Turbo with its H-shaped feature. A 10-inch digital instrument panel gives driver information with a choice of five different views. The central multimedia screen is also 10-inch and is powered by the OpenR Link system with Google built-in for the Techno and Iconic Five trim levels.
