BYD to debut first plug-in hybrid and new luxury sub-brand at Geneva
China’s BYD is continuing its push into Europe with the reveal of new models, its inaugural plug-in hybrid and a brand-new luxury sub-brand at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
The fast-expanding brand, which overtook Tesla as the world’s top-selling EV maker in the last quarter of 2023, will take the wraps off its Seal U crossover complete with its Super DM (Dual Mode) plug-in hybrid technology.
The brand says the model is an “efficient, practical, and eco-conscious solution for daily mobility needs and long worry-free journeys”.
It will be aimed at European countries “where the infrastructure of electric charging is not yet matured, or where customers are in demand of a vehicle that offers all the benefits of electric driving without compromising on range”.
Also on the podium will be the latest-generation Tang seven-seater AWD full electric SUV. The completely revamped model has an official 249-mile (500km) WLTP range and also delivers 1,655 litres of cargo space behind the front row seats plus a “race-car level chassis”.
BYD is also testing the waters for its Yangwang and Denza sub-brands.
Yangwang is focused on the luxury sector and “represents the pinnacle of innovation in inspirational new energy vehicle technology”. Centrestage at the show will be the U8 SUV, bringing a rival to the Land Rover Defender. It showcases the brand’s e4 Platform. It’s said to be the world’s first mass-produced four-motor independent drive technology and uses a motor on each wheel to enable 360-degree ‘tank turns’. The U8 will also feature BYD’s DiSus Intelligent Body Control System, which enhances vehicle agility and compatibility in various driving scenarios.
BYD’s Denza premium sub-brand, run as a JV with Mercedes, will also be at the show. The brand already showcased the D9 seven-seat MPV at IAA Mobility 2023 ahead of its launch this year and will follow this up with the reveal of the N7 full electric mid-size crossover at Geneva.
Currently, BYD sells six full electric models in Europe, depending on the market: the Atto 3 (C-segment SUV), the Han (E-segment sedan), the Tang (E-segment SUV), the Dolphin (C-segment hatchback), the Seal (D-segment saloon) and the Seal U (D-segment SUV).
More will be revealed at BYD’s Press Conference on Monday 26 February at Geneva.
