The second-generation Ford Kuga and Volkswagen Tiguan arrives next year, “designed to meet customer demand for a practical, comfortable and characterful family SUV”.

It’s the latest Stellantis family SUV to be reinvented, following the arrival of the Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall Grandland this year. As with its group siblings, the new C5 Aircross will be built on the STLA Medium platform, marking a first for the brand.

At 4.65m long, it’s 150mm longer than the current car and Citroën says it will offer generous interior space for five passengers while an extended rear overhang, for enhanced aerodynamics, will also likely deliver extra boot space.

The new platform also accommodates all powertrains, including combustion, hybrid and electric. There’s no word on powertrain specifics but the Peugeot 3008 comes with a 136hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with around 85kme all-electric range, and standard- and long-range fully electric versions with 73kWh and 97kWh batteries and up to 668km of range.

The C5 Aircross concept features the French brand’s new logo and comes with vertical colour clips on the front doors and bumper as a nod to the new C3 and C3 Aircross while also gaining the new three-point light signature.

Citroën added that the concept uses clever architectural and design features to improve efficiency, such as the extended rear overhang and a sloping roof, plus the ‘Light Wings’ flush-mounted rear lights.

Its new, more streamlined design gives an estimated 18-mile increase in electric range on the motorway compared to the current C5 Aircross silhouette.

The cabin will deliver “even more comfort, connectivity and space onboard” along with “undisclosed innovations”. Designed as a wellness area, said to resemble a lounge, it will be revealed in full next year.
