Volkswagen has revealed details of its new Amarok pickup ahead of its arrival at the end of 2022.

Developed in partnership with Ford under the firms’ global cooperation, the new model is based on a Ford platform that will also underpin the new Ranger and will launch in some markets with a double cab and four doors and with a two-door single cab in others. 

Although it’s still camouflaged in official pics for now, Volkswagen promises a bolder, much more expressive design that introduces LED headlights and rear lights as standard for all versions and VW’s IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights as an option, along with an X-shaped design for the radiator grille on the top specification models. 

“For the new generation we have significantly modified the Amarok’s archetypal design. It is now unambiguously more expressive and once again appreciably more impressive,” said Albert Kirzinger, head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. 

It also has greater capacity and load-carrying ability than its predecessor. Payload is increasing to up to 1.2 tonnes and a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes is now possible across more engine/gearbox variants. The new Amarok also provides a significantly greater fording depth for driving through waters. 

Onboard space is increased thanks to the new platform; the wheelbase is up 175mm to 3,270mmm, giving more space in the double cab, while overall length is at least 100mm longer than before.  

Powertrain details are yet to be announced but, dependent on engine/gearbox variant and market, will offer one petrol and up to four different diesels with four to six cylinders and cubic capacity of 2.0 to 3.0 litres – optionally with rear-wheel drive, on-demand or permanent all-wheel drive. A series of preconfigured driving modes with multiple levels will be available, including in non-everyday situations.  

Five trim versions will be on offer: the entry-level Amarok, followed by Life and Style designations and two sister top trims in the form of the offroad-focused PanAmericana and the onroad-orientated Aventura.  

The interior will underline the model’s premium focus with intuitive controls, digital cockpit and a tablet-style infotainment display. Top-rung models get artificial leather upholstery for the instrument panel and door panels and decorative stitching.  

Options include an exclusive sound system and electric, 10-way adjustment for the seats.

The Amarok also provides enhanced safety through more than 30 driver assist systems, over 20 of which are completely new to the Amarok.
