Cupra Terramar SUV revealed as sporty Tiguan rival with PHEV option
Cupra has revealed the latest addition to its line-up in the form of the Terramar compact SUV.
Fittingly unveiled at Barcelona, the new model is pitched as the Spanish performance brand’s “new hero for a new era”, underpinned by plans to move Cupra upmarket “into the hotspot of the fastest-growing segment in Europe”.
Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra, said: “With the Cupra Terramar, we will not only grow our portfolio of products but at the same time help our brand to ‘grow-up’ by bringing Cupra upmarket, to new customers and new growing segments, without, however, losing our rebellious and challenger spirit.”
Based on the VW Group’s MQB Evo platform, it delivers a cousin to the Audi Q3 and Volkswagen Tiguan, and forms part of the brand’s biggest-ever product offensive following the recent launches of the new Cupra Leon, Formentor, Born VZ and Tavascan.
Styling draws on the new Cupra design language and features distinctive features such as the three-triangle signature lights seen on other models and rear diffuser. Nine exterior colours will be up for grabs, including two matt options – Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey Matt, as well as the Dark Void, inspired by the plasma colour of the Cupra DarkRebel Showcar.
The interior gets a driver-orientated cockpit featuring a 12.9-inch multimedia display with a retro-illuminated slider, an optional 12-speaker sound system from Sennheiser, and bucket seats using 100% upcycled seaqual yarn (a recycled polyester yarn containing marine plastic) or Dinamica with at least 73% recycled textile or leather that uses a plant-based tanning process.
Expected to be the brand’s last internal combustion engine model, the Terramar will be available with five different powertrains across three technologies. These include the new-generation eHybrid plug-in hybrid units, already seen in Volkswagen Group models such as the Passat estate and Tiguan and delivering up to 272hp and more than 100km (62 miles) of all-electric range.
The line-up also includes conventional TSI petrols and eTSI mild hybrids, while the brand’s usual driving dynamics are assured thanks to the standard sport suspension and progressive steering, as well as the new adaptative chassis control and Akebono brakes.
Designed and developed in Barcelona, the Cupra Terramar will be produced in Audi’s Györ plant in Hungary. Deliveries will start during the last quarter of this year.
Cupra is one of the fastest-growing brands in the industry and has already delivered around 700,000 cars since its launch in 2018. The first six months of 2024 saw the brand record the best first half-year in its history by delivering 125,700 cars, an increase of 17.2% compared to the same period in 2023 (107,300).
