Edge Concept showcases new Ford SUV for Europe
Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Edge Concept marks the launch of Ford’s third SUV model in Europe – the current generation is already on sale in the US and other markets – and is one of 25 global vehicles that Ford has confirmed will go on sale over here by 2017.
‘The original Ford Edge offered customers in North America a fresh, compelling choice for an accommodating, efficient and safe utility vehicle,’ said Joe Hinrichs, executive vice president and president of The Americas, Ford Motor Company. ‘The next-generation Ford Edge – previewed in the Ford Edge Concept – will build on these cornerstones to create a global vehicle with technology to make life easier, and design and craftsmanship to appeal to customers around the globe.’
The Edge will sit above the Fiesta-based EcoSport small SUV and Kuga medium SUV and will have core attributes of a sleek and sporty appearance, capability, fuel efficiency and technology that assist the driver, according to the carmaker.
Key features on the concept include Active Grille Shutters, which automatically open and close to maintain ideal engine operating temperature and maximise aerodynamic efficiency.
Ford has taken a premium approach with the interior, which includes a leather-wrapped and hand-stitched instrument panel and 10-inch centre display featuring Ford SYNC with Voice Control and Touchscreen.
Engine details have not yet been revealed but Ford has announced the inclusion of advanced, automated driving technologies such as the Fully Assisted Parking Aid, which builds on Ford’s Active Park Assist feature to let customers park their vehicles at the touch of a button, or even by remote control. Ford is also working on Obstacle Avoidance systems, which can steer and brake the vehicle to avoid a collision.
