Ford has overhauled its Focus C-segment challenger for 2022, bringing a host of changes that inlcude upgraded infotainment and connectivity.

Also introducing design and powertrain updates, the line-up will again include hatch and estate versions and a new Focus ST variant, developed by Ford Performance.

A core addition is Ford’s new Sync 4 infotainment system, accessed via a 13.2-inch landscape centre screen said to be the largest in the class and with an intuitive interface that now incorporates controls for functions such as heating and ventilation. It also includes connected voice control with natural language understanding, and users of the FordPass app can access a range of connected services via a smartphone, allowing them to carry out remote checks, on fuel or oil levels for example.

Drivers also get complimentary trial access to the Ford Secure subscription service – which provides 24-hour on-call assistance in the event of the vehicle being stolen, including tracking and recovery – and Connected Navigation, which includes real-time and predictive traffic information delivered by TomTom, with Garmin supplying in-vehicle and in-cloud routing to suggest the most efficient route.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility come as standard and Sync 4 can also be updated via Ford Power-Up over-the-air software updates to add in extra features.

The 2022 MY Focus also gains new advanced driver assistance technologies, including Blind Spot Assist, which can apply counter-steering to warn the driver and help avoid a lane change if it detects a potential collision. Also new is Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage, which will warn the driver if another vehicle is in the blind spot of the specific trailer being towed. New Intersection Assist monitors the road ahead for potential collisions with oncoming vehicles in parallel lanes and can automatically apply the brakes at up to 18mph to help prevent or mitigate accidents where a driver is turning across the path of an oncoming vehicle, such as at a crossroads or junction.

Other available ADAS systems include Local Hazard Information, which can inform drivers of forthcoming hazardous situations on the road ahead, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centring.

Design changes are focused on the front end and include a new, more prominent grille integrating the Ford badge and new LED headlights, included as standard and now with incorporated fog light functionality. Each trim also now gets bespoke detailing, bringing a more distinctive design for the Titanium, ST-Line and Active variants, and the Vignale pack has been expanded to include extra premium features.

Ford has also revealed the updated Focus ST, which gets bolder exterior design, new-design 18‑inch alloys as standard and introduces Performance Seats, designed inhouse and certified by German spinal health organisation Aktion Gesunder Rücken eV.

The Focus estate has also been enhanced for extra practicality – its 1,653-litre load space now gets a new wet zone, easy-clean carpet and side trims, along with a vertical divider.

Powertrain line-up is carried over but now includes a new automatic transmission option. Delivering WLTP fuel efficiency from 5.2l/100km and CO2 emissions from 117g/km, the seven-speed Powershift automatic transmission is offered on the 125hp and 155hp 1.0-litre EcoBoost Hybrid 48V mild hybrid powertrains and also offers manual gear selection, with sporty paddle-shifters as standard on ST‑Line variants. Both engines are also available with a six-speed manual gearbox, with WLTP fuel efficiency from 5.1l/100km and CO2 emissions from 115g/km.

The line-up in Europe also includes 100hp and 125hp 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines with a six-speed manual gearbox, and from 5.1l/100km fuel efficiency and 116g/km CO2.

Diesels comprise 95hp and 120hp 1.5-litre EcoBlue engines with fuel efficiency from 4.0l/100 km and 106g/km CO2, paired up with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 280hp 2.3-litre EcoBoost powertrain for the Focus ST is carried over and has official CO2 emissions from 180g/km and 8.3l/100km.

All models feature selectable Drive Mode technology, providing Normal, Sport and Eco modes, while Active models also get Slippery and Trail modes.
