Frankfurt Motor Show: Kia adds bi-fuel model to Picanto range
The three-cylinder 1.0-litre Kappa engine generates 67hp and 90Nm whilst offering lower running costs than petrol-only models. The new unit records fuel economy in LPG mode of 5.8l/100km and CO2 emissions of 100g/km while automatic stop-start models achieve 5.6l/100km and 97g/km.
The 27-litre pressurised LPG tank is located beneath the trunk floor where the spare wheel previously was. Boot capacity is 152 litres compared to 200 litres for the standard model and a tyre-mobility kit is provided in case of a puncture.
The tank and extra equipment adds 51kg to the Picanto’s weight, pushing the 0-100kph time up slightly from 13.9 seconds to 14.5 seconds despite a change to the final drive ratio. Top speed remains unchanged at 153kph.
Like the rest of the line-up, the model will be available with a choice of two equipment levels and five-door or three-door bodystyles.
‘The Picanto is one of the most competitive vehicles in the “city car” A-segment, delivering premium features at affordable prices and we anticipate that the new bi-fuel model will prove particularly popular in those European countries where LPG is readily available,’ said Benny Oeyen, vice president marketing and product planning, Kia Motors Europe.
Initially, the bi-fuel model will be available in Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Greece, Portugal and the Netherlands – where it is expected to account for up to 7% of Picanto sales. Kia adds that the left-hand drive Picanto LPG will be the first, and only, LPG-powered car in the marketplace with a seven-year warranty.
