Geneva News: Land Rovers to gain 9-speed auto box

By / 12 years ago / News / No Comments

The ZF 9HP box is designed for transverse applications and is set to reduce emissions and improve efficiency with smaller ratio steps also giving improved response during acceleration, with improved shift quality and refinement.

In addition, the lowest ratio in the 9HP is lower than the existing six-speed transmission and is designed for off-road use, towing, and on-road conditions like steep gradients.

Drivers will also be able to use a skip-shift function for much swifter downshifting to meet rapid deceleration demands while a "Fast-Off" mode that measures the rate of throttle release, anticipates further requests for high power, then holds the gear if necessary.

Despite offering an extra three gear ratios, the new transmission is just 6mm than the outgoing six-speed box and weighs 7.5kg less.

The new nine-speed transmission will be produced at ZF's Gray Court facility in South Carolina, USA.
