Global LeasePlan research shows safety & financial benefits of telematics

By / 9 years ago / News / No Comments

In the global LeasePlan MobilityMonitor survey, conducted by TNS among 3,377 lease drivers in 20 countries worldwide, 35% of the drivers questioned stated that they would change their driving behaviour if a telematics device were installed. A total of 13% of the respondents said that they would probably pay more attention to fuel consumption, 9% would most likely drive more cautiously and 7% said they would probably drive more slowly.

The company added that the results have been corroborated by its other research. A pilot project by LeasePlan Italy showed that telematics technology enables risk management, improved driver safety and cost savings to go hand in hand. Compared to 2013, the accident claim frequency of a fleet of 16,000 cars (80% of which were LCVs) equipped with telematics devices decreased by almost one third in 2015. LeasePlan Italy also noticed another very important trend: the recovery rate of stolen vehicles increased substantially, from 14% to 86%.

Meanwhile, LeasePlan Spain recently developed a driver application based on telematics data, allowing approximately 7,000 drivers (75% passenger cars, 25% LCVs) to monitor their own driving behaviour. The initial results are promising: a 12% reduction in insurance claims and an 8% reduction in fuel consumption.

LeasePlan added that it is looking to increase the number of markets where it offers telematics solutions from the current total of 14 countries to 20 in the course of 2016.

Nick Salkeld, chief commercial officer at LeasePlan, said: “Our telematics solutions support fleet managers in improving the performance of their fleet in terms of cost control, safety and sustainability. We combine data captured by in-vehicle technology with fleet management expertise to give fleet managers a comprehensive overview of their fleet performance and reveal potential improvements and savings. At the same time, telematics allows LeasePlan to provide an even better level of service to individual drivers, such as in the area of driver safety.”
