Honda Prelude to return as hybrid coupe

Honda has confirmed its Prelude sports coupé will arrive in Europe early 2026, complete with hybrid technology and an advanced new gearbox.

The Honda Prelude e:HEV model will arrive in the first half of 2026

The original Prelude debuted 46 years ago and sold across five generations until 2000. The sixth-generation model will pick up where its predecessor left off, offering a “compelling blend of style and sophistication alongside an efficient hybrid powertrain”.

Initially revealed as a near-production concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, it’s expected to use a version of the Civic’s e:HEV petrol-hybrid system, which combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a pair of electric motors.

The sports coupe marks the continuation of Honda’s 25-year hybrid heritage, following the launch of the revolutionary Insight back in 1999.

The all-new Prelude will also debut Honda’s S+ Shift technology, said to simulate the sound and feel of quick automatic gear changes.

Hans de Jaeger, senior vice president, Honda Motor Europe, said: “The Honda Prelude is an iconic nameplate, and this latest model promises to build on that heritage with our trademark hybrid performance and the latest dynamic technology. All with a view to not only delivering exceptional efficiency, but also the fun-to-drive performance for which this model is known. We are excited for its arrival in Europe following a very positive reception so far.”

The Prelude e:HEV model will arrive in the first half of 2026. Honda’s hybrid line-up also includes the Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V and CR-V, all available with e:HEV powertrains as standard.

Honda also revealed its 0 Series prototype electric vehicles this week ahead of their debut at the CES event in January. The brand is also rumoured to be exploring a merger with Nissan in a move to counter growing threats from Chinese electric vehicle makers.
