Hyundai Ioniq 9 unveiled as seven-seat electric SUV with 620km range
Hyundai has revealed the Ioniq 9 electric SUV at LA ahead of its arrival in 2025 with up to seven seats and 620km (385 miles) of range.
The counterpart to the Kia EV9 and a rival to the Volvo EX90, the brand’s flagship model and its largest yet was previewed as the Seven concept three years ago, again at the LA Auto Show, and stays faithful to many of the original design cues.
Based on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) as the Ioniq 5 and 6, and featuring the same bold styling and pixel lighting, the luxury SUV was originally intended to bear Ioniq 7 branding but has now shifted up the ladder to become the Ioniq 9, allowing other new models to sit under it.
Three different powertrains will be available, all fitted with the same floor-mounted 110.3kWh battery.
The Long-Range RWD model is powered by a 218hp rear motor and gets the headline WLTP range figure of 620km when fitted with 19-inch wheels. It’s able to deliver the 0-100km/h dash in 9.4 seconds.
The Long-Range AWD alternative gains an extra 95hp front motor, cutting range but bringing the 0-100km/h time down to 6.7 seconds.
The top-rung Performance AWD models have 218hp motors front and rear and take just 5.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-100km/h.
The 400V/800V E-GMP architecture enables superfast charging times that can deliver a 10 to 80% recharge in 24 minutes. As with its other Ioniq counterparts and the Kia EV line-up, the Ioniq 9 also has vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability with a V2L port in the cargo area that allows users to power devices via a standard power outlet using the EV’s battery.
Boasting ‘Aerosthetic’ styling and futuristic design elements including streamlined roof and flush surfaces, the Ioniq 9 stands out for its bold styling, echoed in interior with a panoramic curved display, floating dashboard, slim air vents and ambient lighting.
The cabin has been conceived to create a lounge-like atmosphere with light flooding through the panoramic sunroof and can be configured with up to seven seats. These include ‘Relaxation Seats’ in the first and second rows able to fully recline and kitted out with a Dynamic Body Care system that includes a massage function.
The Ioniq 9 also introduces second-row Swivelling Seats, allowing the rear occupants to face each other when the vehicle is stationary.
The slidable Universal Island 2.0 console provides “an impressive level of storage” and delivers a walk-through front-row seating arrangement. The bidirectional armrests can be opened from the front and rear allowing easy access to the console from the second row.
This centre console can be moved by up to 190mm, allowing passengers in the second row to access it easily, and comes with 5.6 litres of storage in the upper tray, as well as 12.6 litres of storage in the lower sliding tray.
Luggage space ranges from 620 litres with all three rows in place and up to 1,323 with the third-row seats folded flat. The ‘frunk’ has 88 litres for RWD models and 52 litres for AWD models.
New technologies intended to address common EV customer concerns include a refined EV Route Planner, improved battery consistency, an enhanced torque control display, a comprehensive energy report feature and other smart improvements.
Charging status is denoted via green dots on the steering wheel to keep drivers informed of remaining energy. The Ioniq 9 also gets the Hyundai AI Assistant; an AI-enabled voice recognition system similar to a home virtual assistant and activated by a button.
Hyundai’s new Features on Demand (FoD) service allows customers to further personalise their vehicle with over-the-air digital upgrades such as dynamic lighting patterns when opening the door, dynamic escort light when closing the door, and content streaming options including Amazon Music and Soundcloud.
Bluelink Connected Car Services bring online voice recognition and a range of features such as real-time road surface and driving judgments, as well as a ‘Driver Safety Index’ based on driver patterns.
The Ioniq 9 is also available with a digital key function, a fast wireless charger with a rubberised charging pad to prevent devices sliding when on the move, and a cooling fan to reduce device temperature when charging.
A UV-C steriliser will also be available in selected markets, offering a multi-tray sterilisation function that can disinfect small items, such as mobile phones, wallets and masks.
The infotainment system includes a 12-inch cluster and a 12-inch integrated monitor as part of the panoramic curved display. The standard in-car audio setup features an eight-speaker sound system, with the option of a premium Bose 14-speaker stereo, which supports 5.1-channel surround sound, wireless updates and advanced Bose features.
The Ioniq 9 launches in Korea and the United States in the first half of 2025, followed by a rollout planned for Europe and other markets later. Expect pricing to be announced closer to this date.
