Hyundai has announced initial details of its Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, which arrives spring 2021 and will have around a 31-mile electric-only range.

The carmaker revealed late summer that the fourth-gen model will have an all-electrified line-up – said to be the widest in its class – and has announced some specs for the full hybrid petrol and mild hybrid petrols and diesels but details of the PHEV have remained thin on the ground.

It’s now said the 265hp powertrain will use a third-generation 1.6-litre T-GDi Smartstream petrol engine paired with a 91hp electric motor with a 13.8kWh lithium polymer battery and driven through a six-speed automatic transmission (6AT) operated through shift by wire and standard four-wheel drive.

It’s also equipped with an Active Air Flap that adjusts air intake depending on the engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed and other parameters, minimising air resistance and maximising fuel efficiency.

The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid will be powered by the electric motor alone at low speeds and can also be switched to fully electric driving on demand, giving an all-electric driving range of over 50km (around 31 miles).

Four-wheel drive will be standard and drivers will also be able to use a Terrain Mode selector when needed. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid also comes with optional Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) with adaptive damping technology.

Equipped with a 7.2kW on-board charger, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid can be charged at an EV charging station or using a home wall box, although details of charge times haven’t been announced.

Boot space will be up compared to the previous Tucson generation, offering 558 litres (+9%) overall for luggage with the seats up and up to 1,737 litres (+15%) with the seats folded.

Onboard equipment will include a 10.25-inch digital cluster and a 10.25-inch AVN display with Hyundai Bluelink connected car services and the ability for drivers to check the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid’s battery charge level and manage charging settings via the app.

Driver assistance features include a Remote Smart Parking Assist self-parking function, Highway Driving Assist lane centring and a PHEV-exclusive of Parking Collision-avoidance Assist, which helps prevent collisions with obstacles in the rear while reversing at low speeds.

The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid will be available in Europe starting in spring 2021.
