Hyundai is pushing ahead with plans for hydrogen mobility with the debut of its second-generation Nexo SUV.

Hyundai is targeting more than 700km (435 miles)

Showcased at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025, the new model builds on the first Nexo, debuted in 2018, with more power, space and range along with a bold new design and enhanced technology.

Powertrain advancements are said to be significant and centre around the fuel cell (FC) and power electronics (PE) systems, which have been enhanced to improve power output and performance.

These are complemented by a new motor system, increasing the PE system’s power output and battery capacity. As a result, total output is up from 184hp (135kW) to 258hp (190kW), helping to deliver a faster 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.8 seconds, compared with 9.2 seconds for the previous Nexo.

The all-new model also comes with increased hydrogen tank capacity – which now stands at 6.69kg, up from 6.33kg in the previous-generation Nexo – and is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, resulting in improved passenger comfort and increased rear cargo capacity, with a maximum of 993 litres.

In terms of driving range, Hyundai is targeting more than 700km (435 miles).

Features to “enhance the hydrogen electric experience” include an FCEV Route Planner that helps drivers reach their destinations by incorporating necessary charging stations into routes when energy levels are low.

Technology includes a connected car navigation cockpit system with a 12.3-inch driver information cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment monitor. The system supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates and features generative AI voice recognition. Infotainment offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a Bang & Olufsen Sound System with up to 14 speakers, and there’s a head-up display with a 12-inch display plus a dual wireless charging system that enables high-speed charging for smartphones at 15W.

Sales will start in global markets later this year – there’s no announcement yet on a planned launch in the UK.
