Kia Stonic will provide a rival to the Nissan Juke as well as forthcoming Hyundai Kona.

Based on the Rio supermini platform, the Stonic draws on styling from Kia’s Sorento and Sportage SUVs, including the familiar ‘tiger nose’ grille seen in the design sketches, with Kia placing a strong focus on its European-led design and vast array of customisation options. Inside, the Stonic will bring a floating central screen and smartphone access to many of the car’s functions.

No engine details have been revealed but the model is likely to carry over engines from the Rio line-up, including 1.4-litre petrol and diesels.

The Stonic will join an increasingly competitive marketplace, alongside compact crossovers such as the Vauxhall’s Mokka X and the Renault Captur as well as the Nissan Juke. Volkswagen is also planning on entering the fray with a model based on the T-Roc concept seen at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show while the Hyundai Kona – sister model to the Stonic – also arrives this year.

The Kia Stonic debuts in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
