Kia Telluride concept hints at possible full size SUV for US
Based on a modified version of Sorento platform and featuring a three-row, seven-seat layout, the model could provide a replacement for the Borrego (Mohave in other markets) SUV that exited the US in 2009.
“The Kia Telluride makes an aesthetic statement for the Kia brand as a bold, all-new luxury SUV with an abundance of advanced technology, focusing particular attention on the experience and comfort of second-row occupants,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer, Kia Design Center America (KDCA). “Longer, wider and taller than the recently redesigned Sorento CUV, Telluride allows us to envision what a full-size seven-passenger SUV from Kia could look like.”
Design features include front doors and rear-hinged back doors that swing open 90 degrees in opposite directions
Inside there’s four black-leather captain’s seats that use Smart Sensors to capture health info. The middle row seats fold virtually flat and there’s also a folded third-row bench.
The Telluride also features a Swipe Command touch-sensitive infotainment system and 3D-printed components for the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel.
The PHEV powertrain uses a 270hp 3.5-litre petrol direct injected V6 engine and 130hp electric motor with all-wheel drive and is said to achieve more than 30mpg (US) on the highway.
Commenting on its plans for the model, the brand said: “While there are currently no plans to bring the Telluride to production, Kia has a history of delivering production vehicles that bear strong resemblance to preceding concept.”
