Kia unveils new Sorento
Unveiled in Korea, the third-generation model is built on a new platform that brings increased length (+95 mm to 4,780 mm), reduced height (down 15mm to 1,685 mm) and extra width (+5mm to 1,890 mm).
Despite the lower roofline, the new model – which is offered in both five and seven-seat versions – as well as increased boot space with the third row seats folded flat, up from 515 to 605 litres.
Incorporating elements from the Cross GT concept at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, the new Sorento adds in the long bonnet and the distinctive wide D-pillars from the previous generation as well as a more upright version of Kia’s familiar “tiger-nose” grille.
Kia also promises improved quality, in particular for the interior, which was styled by the brand's European design team, based in Frankfurt.
The styling of the cabin follows a “modern and wide” theme and brings more soft-touch materials and leather.
Distinctive features include the Swiss watch-inspired centre-console, which incorporates Kia's latest HMI (human-machine interface) technologies.
Depending on market, customers will be able to specify the interior in either single-tone (Saturn Black) or two-tone (Saturn Black and Stone) colour schemes with cloth or leather trim. Additionally, brown or light grey colour schemes in leather trim will be offered as an option.
Kia also says the new model brings improved NVH characteristics, whilst the new bodyshell offers increased torsional rigidity for further refinement as well improved safety.
There are also a number of new features available, depending on the market, including an Around-View Monitor, with four cameras helping the driver to manoeuvre when parking, and a Smart Power Tailgate.
Drivers in designated markets will also be able to select from active safety technologies including Adaptive Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Front Collision Warning, Blind-Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Speed Limit Information Function.
Five engines are available with the new Sorento, depending on country, offering power outputs ranging from 172 to 270PS. These include a 2.4-litre gasoline direct injection (GDI) unit, 2.4-litre and 3.3-litre multi-point injection (MPI) engines, and revised 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre “R” turbo-diesel units. Of these, only the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and 2.4-litre GDI engines will be sold in Europe, with the diesel unit expected to account for the majority of sales.
Following its unveiling in Korea, the all-new Kia Sorento will make its European premiere on Thursday 2nd October at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
