Sized to compete with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, the newcomer will be the first ever two-wheel drive Discovery in the model’s 20-year history, with the eD4 diesel set to offer CO2 emissions of 119g/km when it joins the range late in 2015.

The launch range will comprise a single 2.2-litre 188bhp diesel, the SD4, which will only be available with four-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic gearboxes.

Although the car is 239mm shorter than the full-size Discovery, cabin space has been increased by a compact multi-link rear axle, which also gives the Discovery Sport the agility to go with its nameplate. The sliding middle row means it can provide up to 981 litres of luggage capacity, and customers can add up to four 12V power sockets and six USB ports for passengers’ electronic devices.

On-board technology includes a new infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen and the ability to show and control smartphone apps on the dashboard. This also pairs with the InControl Remote app, which allows drivers to check the doors are locked, read fuel levels, download mileage reports and track the vehicle if it is stolen.

Designed, even in two-wheel drive form, to be used off-road, the Discovery Sport features low overhangs, lots of ground clearance and the same Terrain Response system as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. A bonnet airbag, automatic emergency braking and cruise control, and the ability to manoeuvre itself into parking spaces all help improve driveability on tarmac.
