Mazda rolls out Apple CarPlay upgrade
Mazda is introducing Apple CarPlay connectivity as an upgrade for new and existing vehicles with the MZD Connect infotainment system.
The dealer-fit update, which involves hardware and software, marks the first time Mazda has offered CarPlay connectivity in its vehicles. It can be fitted to new or existing MZD Connect-equipped Mazda models, alongside an update to add Android Auto, and includes a higher-powered USB connector for faster charging with compatible devices.
Both systems enable selected apps to be displayed and controlled via the car’s rotary commander knob and, while the vehicle is stationary, Apple CarPlay can be accessed using the touchscreen. It means drivers can dictate messages, make calls and utilise audio-streaming features, as well as using a growing number of navigation apps without relying on the car’s built in software.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay have become essential features in new vehicles. Research from consultancy company Strategy Analytics found driver interest was ranked at 84% and 85% for the systems, with 25% and 29% saying it was essential. Most saying they would pay extra for the technology, and reported using it instead of manufacturers’ own software.
