Mercedes reveals S-Class Coupe

Set to replace the CL in the brand’s line-up, the new model marks a return to the S-Class Coupe moniker and is based on the S-Class sedan platform.

Highlights of the model include the world premiere of the active curve tilting function, which forms part of the Magic Body Control suspension system already seen on the S-Class sedan.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG with responsibility for corporate research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development, explained the new feature, saying: ‘The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle's occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers.’

Design marks a broad departure from the sedan, with Gorden Wagener, vice president Daimler AG, saying: ‘Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor. The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with absolute precision.’

Features include a standard panoramic roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof, which comes with the MAGIC SKY CONTROL function to make the roof lighter or darker at the touch of a button. There’s also full-LED headlamps with the option of headlamps with 47 Swarovski crystals.

Inside, there’s a two-part dashboard design that includes a prominent two-part wide-screen format TFT display. There’s also a standard touchpad that allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any of the head unit's languages.

Meanwhile the new S-Class Coupe also brings an optional head-up display with vehicle speed, navigation instructions and driving assistance system messages.

Engine details have not been announced but are likely to be based on the sedan line-up, with a 449hp S550 Coupe having already been announced for the US market and available as a 4MATIC model only.
