The engine produces 105PS, in line with similarly sized diesels from rival manufacturers, and could be a vital addition to its model line-up, particularly in the Mazda3 which is only available with a relatively large and powerful 150PS 2.2-litre diesel.

While efficiency figures haven’t been released yet, the next Mazda2 will target the lowest fuel consumption of any non-hybrid on the market.

Like the larger 2.2 SKYACTIV-D unit it meets Euro 6 emissions requirements and Japan’s Post New Long-term regulations without requiring an exhaust after-treatment system. Mazda claims the same linear power delivery through the rev range as the larger engine.

Mazda has had a rapid rise in fleet interest for units featuring SKYACTIV Technology, which includes improvements to the drivetrain, body structure and chassis to increase fuel economy and driver enjoyment. In the UK, fleet registrations increased 107% from 4,007 in 2012/2013 to 8,319 in 2013/2014.
