New Audi A6 Avant puts focus on practicality and aesthetics
Audi’s new A6 Avant will bring the same boot space as before despite introducing a more aggressive design.
Due to start UK orders this summer, the latest Avant – which follows hot on the heels of the eighth-generation A6 saloon, carries over the previous 565 litres of boot space in five-seat mode, increasing to 1,680 litres with the standard 40:20:40 backrests folded down.
That’s despite introducing a more rakish rear-end that exemplifies the brand’s new design language, with the boot space provided by its longer design and extended wheelbase.
The Avant also brings a luggage compartment rail system as standard along with electronic opening for the tailgate and the luggage compartment cover open electrically as standard, with an optional foot sensor for the tailgate.
Engine line-up is carried over from the saloon and brings four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all of which feature mild hybrid technology from the A8 and standard stop-start functionality.
All versions will be equipped with either seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch or eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmissions, and quattro all-wheel-drive will be a standard or optional feature depending on model. A sports differential is also available along with dynamic all-wheel steering, enhancing the progressive steering that comes as standard.
Four suspension set-ups are on offer, including the standard steel spring suspension, sport suspension, suspension with damper control and adaptive air suspension, also with controlled damping. Drivers can adjust the settings for all controlled suspensions in the Audi drive select dynamic handling system.
Driver assistance features are divided into ‘City assist’ and ‘Tour’ packs. The City assist pack includes features such as the new crossing assist system, while the Tour pack offers adaptive cruise assist, which supplements the adaptive cruise control by means of gentle steering intervention to keep the vehicle in lane. The Tour pack also features an efficiency assist system to help encourage more economical driving.
Onboard technology includes voice control systems and the latest version of the MMI touch response operating system, which provides a twin-display system to control the majority of functions. The fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit with its 12.3-inch high resolution in-binnacle LCD screen is optionally available, as is a full colour head-up display and optional MMI navigation plus.
