New Jeep Grand Cherokee to bring first-ever plug-in hybrid
Jeep has revealed its fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, due early 2022 and introducing a plug-in hybrid version for the first time.
Unveiled as the brand celebrates its 80th year, the new generation of Jeep’s flagship SUV features overhauled exterior and interior design but is also said to be the most technologically advanced and 4×4-capable Grand Cherokee yet.
As part of its ‘zero emission freedom’, the line-up will include a 4xe PHEV powertrain that teams up a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, two electric motors and eight-speed automatic, giving 375hp and 637Nm of torque.
It’s targeted to deliver 25 miles of all-electric range from its 17kWh battery, along with 57mpg US (68.5mpg UK) and with a combined driving range of more than 440 miles (708km). It will be available in various trim levels, including the tough off-road focused Trailhawk.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe will also have a 2,720kg max towing capability and comes with Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction management system to give the Jeep brand’s “legendary 4×4 capability”. Drivers can also choose from three E Selec driving modes, encompassing Hybrid, Electric plus eSave, which prioritises the engine and saves the battery charge for later use.
The Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid arrives after Jeep’s news earlier this year that it will have a fully electric model in every category of its SUV line-up by 2025. The announcement was made at the online EV Day 2021 held by parent firm Stellantis, which saw the group reveal plans to invest more than €30bn (£25.8bn) through 2025 in electrification and software, and build five gigafactories in Europe and North America by 2030.
The Grand Cherokee line-up will also include a 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-litre V8, depending on market.
Onboard tech includes Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system with up to three 10.1-inch and two 10.25-inch digital displays in the cabin, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a new digital rear view mirror. Head-up display is available, along with a new wireless charging pad, enhanced Amazon Alexa virtual assistant functionality and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot to connect up to eight devices.
The new Grand Cherokee also features more than 110 advanced safety and security features, including Active Driving Assist with hands-on automated driving, plus 360-degree surround view and night vision cameras.
The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee will start deliveries in North America early in 2022 and in global markets later that year.
