Mercedes has taken the wraps off its second-generation GLC SUV, introducing a new, larger platform, latest tech and an updated all-electrified engine line-up.

As the brand’s best-selling model over the last two years, it’s one of the most important vehicles in its product portfolio and rivals models such as the BMW X3. 

The new version moves to the MRA2 platform used for models such as the C-Class, increasing length by 60mm, stretching the wheelbase and bringing longer front and rear overhangs. It also sits 4mm lower while the track widths have grown by 6mm at the front and 23mm at the rear.  

Luggage capacity is up by 50 litres to 600 litres and the GLC comes with the Easy-Pack one-touch electric tailgate as standard.  

The use of the new platform also enables the move to a fully electrified engine line-up that includes a trio of plug-in hybrids – the petrol-electric 300 e and 400 e and diesel-electric 300 de – offering a range of over 100km (62 miles), up to 333hp of power and emissions from 14g/km. The 31.2kWh battery can be charged at up to 11kW AC as standard or 60kW DC as an option, the latter giving a full charge in around 30 minutes. 

The engine line-up also includes four-cylinder units from the current FAME (Family of Modular Engines) engine family with 48V mild-hybrid tech. 

All models come with 4Matic all-wheel drive and the GLC also adopts a new four-link front suspension and a multi-link independent rear suspension. Airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering are available as an option while the plug-in hybrids have air suspension and level control at the rear axle as standard. The AMG Line Exterior model comes with sport suspension. 

An Offroad Engineering package is also offered and increases ground clearance by 20mm while bringing an underride guard at the front and underbody protection. An enhanced Trailer Manoeuvring Assist is another option.  

Full spec details are yet to be announced but Mercedes says standard equipment has been significantly upgraded while equipment packages now bundle up items that are normally ordered together, reducing the number of options available.  

The interior features a 12.3-inch driver’s display and 11.9-inch central screen, based on the latest generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system. MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation is available as an option.  

Latest assistance systems debut in the Driving Assistance package and provide extra or enhanced features. The Active Distance Assist Distronic, for example, can now react to stationary vehicles on the road at speeds of up to 100km/h (62mph) – up from 60km/h (37mph).  

New offroad features and systems also debut; standard equipment includes an off-road driving mode and DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation).  

The new GLC is due to open for orders towards the end of 2022.
