New Tesla V4 Supercharger opens to all EVs in UK
Tesla has launched its new-generation V4 Supercharger in the UK, further opening up its charging network to all brands.
The chargers, also rolling out in other markets in Europe, are able to supply up to 250kW – enabling around 150 miles of charge in just 10 minutes – and are able to be used by anyone with a CCS charging port thanks to their contactless payment terminal, supporting government regulations laid out this summer. Non-Tesla EVs can also access the charger via the Tesla app as with the existing V3 units. The new chargers also come with a 3m cable.
Tesla said the V4 Superchargers have been “futureproofed” and will be able to reach higher charging speeds in the future, although specifics haven’t been revealed.
The first V4 Supercharger has gone live at Tesla’s Tottenham centre and is open to the public now. More V4 units will follow; the brand has said several existing supercharger sites and the majority of new sites in 2024 will be upgraded to V4 and open to all EVs. First launched in the Netherlands, the new chargers are also being rolled out in other markets including Germany and France.
Tesla’s existing UK network spans more than 1,100 Superchargers at some 115 locations and with a 99.5% uptime.
Transport Minister Jesse Norman attended the official opening and said: “Electric vehicles are a key part of the UK’s transition to a prosperous green economy. I am delighted that Tesla are investing in EV charging and infrastructure that will benefit all EV drivers through its new public rapid charging hub.
“The Government is making it easier than ever to own an electric vehicle, most recently by introducing new regulations to improve the ease of charging an EV, but it is private investment that will ultimately make the difference.”
Tesla first opened up its UK Supercharger network in 2022, with drivers of other EV brands able to access its previous-generation 250kW V3 Superchargers and 150kW V2 Superchargers solely via the app.
Fiona Howarth, CEO Octopus EV, said the latest move was “a game-changer for EV drivers.
“Tesla has led the electric revolution with great cars and an exceptional charging network. It’s now fantastic to see them rolling out their V4 Superchargers that are designed for all EVs with CCS. It’s great news for all UK drivers, and our shared vision for zero-carbon transport.”
The Electric Vehicles Association also said the move was a major benefit to EV drivers.
James Court, CEO, elaborated: “Tesla’s Supercharger network has been a point of envy for many EV owners across the UK. We look forward to the rollout of these new V4 Superchargers designed for all EVs and the continued opening up of existing sites to all electric vehicles in the UK. This is a great benefit to all EV drivers given their widespread coverage and reliability.”
