Next-gen Audi Q5 switches to new platform and electrified line-up

Audi has unveiled the new edition of its bestselling Q5 SUV, now powered by a new generation of electrified engines and upcoming plug-in hybrids.

First launched in 2008, the Q5 has been one of the most popular SUVs in the midsize segment in Germany and Europe for more than 15 years.

On sale from next spring, the third-generation Q5 builds on this with dynamic design, latest engines, new infotainment features and enhanced driver assistance systems.

According to the carmaker, the latest Q5 will set new standards in its sector, combining a “sporty, technology-oriented design language” with “unrivalled versatility and proven suitability for everyday use”.

It’s the brand’s second model to be based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) platform, following the new A5, enabling the arrival of the hybrid variants as Audi continues to rejuvenate its portfolio.

Full UK pricing and specification will be announced next month but the European market launch will bring a launch line-up of a trio of mild hybrids, all kitted out with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The entry-level engine is the 2.0 TFSI petrol, which delivers 204hp and 340Nm of torque, along with quattro all-wheel drive. The line-up also includes a 2.0 TDI diesel, delivering the same 204p of power and 400Nm of torque.

The SQ5 features a 3.0 TFSI V6 all-wheel drive petrol with 367hp and maximum torque of 550Nm.

Dynamically tuned steel suspension is included as standard while sports suspension is available as an option on higher-spec versions.

Plug-in hybrid Q5 SUV models will arrive later along with coupé-style Sportback versions.

The interior is based on a new electronics architecture that enables a ‘Digital Stage’ combining the Audi MMI panoramic display and the MMI passenger display. On higher trims, this also includes a 10.9-inch MMI passenger display with Active Privacy Mode that only shows the display to the front passenger, helping to prevent driver distraction.

The smart infotainment system uses Android Automotive OS as its operating system, enabling over-the-air updates to ensure the latest Audi connect services are always up to date. Apps such as YouTube and Spotify are available via the store for third-party apps, which is integrated directly into the MMI and does not require a smartphone to use.

A Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with 16 loudspeakers and 685 watts of power is standard on SQ5 Edition 1, or optionally available on Q5 as part of Sound & Vision Pack.

A configurable head-up display is available as part of the Sound & Vision Pack, or standard on SQ5 Edition 1.

In Europe, standard-fit driver assistance systems deliver parking system plus with 360 display, park assist plus, reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and speed limiter, lane departure warning, swerve assist and front turn assist, front emergency brake assist, front cross traffic intersection assist, efficiency assistant and attention and drowsiness assistant.

Boot space stands at up to 1,473 litres, depending on the model variant, and higher grades will come with a fully adjustable rear seat that can be moved lengthways and tilted to increase volume.

Other practical features include a larger storage compartment under the centre armrest, various smaller storage areas, an inductive and cooled charging tray with 15 watts of charging power in the front centre console, two USB-C ports in the front, and two in the rear.
