Launched in April 2014 to replace the previous 1.7-litre diesel, the 1.6 CDTi is available in two power outputs – with 110PS and 136PS. CO2 emissions for the 110PS version are now reduced to 94g/km (vs 97g/km), with combined fuel economy of 3.6l/100km – down by 0.1 litres.

Meanwhile the 136PS version now emits 99g/km – down from 104g/km with combined fuel economy down 0.2 litres to 3.7l/100km.

The new Astra engine comes as Opel completely renews its diesel platform over 18 months, alongside the 82g/km Corsa 1.3 CDTI and the new 170PS Insignia 2.0 CDTI, which will both also hit the dealerships in the upcoming weeks.

‘Our new powertrains demonstrate how modern mobility works. CO2 reduction without making compromises on performance and comfort is the motto,’ said Charles Klein, vice president vehicle engineering Europe. ‘We now offer extremely efficient turbo diesels in every vehicle class – from our new Corsa with phenomenal 82 g/km of CO2 to the Astra and the midsize flagship, the Insignia.’
