Opel reveals new Insignia
Opel has published the first images of the new Insignia prior to its unveiling next March at the Geneva Motor Show.
Now badged as the Insignia Grand Sport, the new model is based on a completely new vehicle architecture and is longer, lower and wider over an extended wheelbase which offers more cabin space than the car it replaces – coupe-like styling and upmarket materials were targets during development.
Despite its increased dimensions, the new model is up to 175kg lighter thanks to optimised packaging and the use of lightweight materials. No engine details have been revealed but according Vauxhall chairman and managing director Rory Harvey, it will set new standards for efficiency. Opel has also announced a new all-wheel drive with torque vectoring and a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
It also gets the latest technology; a new version of the IntelliLux system likely to include Apple and Android connectivity, expanded OnStar functionality with a personal assistant service including booking of hotel rooms, and an upgraded IntelliLux LED matrix headlight system said to be quicker to respond and with twice as many segments.
Other highlights include Lane Keep Assist with automated steering correction, a new head-up display and a 360-degree camera along with AGR-certified premium seats and front and rear seat heating right up to the heated windshield.
“Opel once again lands a major coup with the new Insignia Grand Sport. Our new flagship takes all of the highly acclaimed virtues of its successful brother, the Astra, to a higher level. No other car in the Insignia class can boast as many ultra-modern technologies. We made it light, agile and fantastic to drive. And our designers gave it an exceptional combination of elegance and athleticism that even cars from upper classes and prices will envy,” said Opel CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann.
The Insignia is one of three significant new product launches in 2017. Opel is also launching the Qashqai-rivalling Crossland X, and the Grandland X which likely to be positioned as an equivalent SUV to the Insignia Grand Sport.
