Opel/Vauxhall has revealed its Vivaro-e electric van, which goes on sale this summer and will offer up to 330km official range along with a 1,275kg payload.

Opel Vivaro-e

Starting deliveries later this year, the Vivaro-e is part of the brand’s previously outlined electrification offensive and will be joined by the electric Combo-e in 2021; Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model by 2024.

Built on the same line as the diesel-engined Vivaro, it’ll be available in three lengths and a number of body variants, including crew cab, platform cab and people carrier, while offering payloads comparable to those of similar LCVs with internal combustion engines: with 1,275kg, the Vivaro-e offers a payload almost as high as the Cargo S 2.0-litre diesel versions (maximum payload 1,405kg). Opel also says it’s the only fully electric LCV capable of towing a trailer (with a maximum towing capacity of 1.0-tonne).

Thanks to the practical FlexCargo load-through on the front passenger side, the 4.6m3-cargo capacity of the S increases to 5.1m3. This enables transportation of objects up to 3.32m in length. The 4.95m and 5.30m M and L versions have maximum cargo capacities of 5.8 and 6.6m3 respectively. Ladders or panels up to 3.67 or 4.02m in length can be stowed securely, while the multitude of storage areas in the cockpit (which features an electric parking brake) comfortably accommodate numerous smaller items.

The electric motor provides 136hp of power with 260Nm of torque, giving an electronically controlled maximum speed of 130km/h.

Customers can choose between two lithium-ion batteries; a 75kWh pack offering an official WLTP range of up to 33okm and a smaller 50kWh battery with a range of up to 230km that will be targeted at business users covering smaller areas.

As the Vivaro was planned from outset to include a fully electric variant, the battery is located under the load compartment to avoid impacting load space and also ensuring a low centre of gravity.

With a 100kW DC public charging station, charging of the 50kWh battery to 80% takes 30 minutes, rising to 45 minutes for the 75kWh battery. Depending on the market and infrastructure, the Vivaro-e features a three-phase 11kW on-board charger or a single-phase 7.4kW on-board charger as standard.

Drivers can also make use of the OpelConnect e-remote control functions, enabling them to check the battery’s state-of-charge or programme air conditioning and charging times from their smartphones. Other OpelConnect features include eCall and breakdown calls to services such as real-time navigation and vehicle status and information.

Drivers can also use the ‘Charge My Car’ function from the ‘Free2Move Services’ app, which enables access to more than 140,000 charging points throughout Europe, including payment.

As per the standard Vivaro, equipment includes a range of driver assistance systems, from head-up display to Lane Keep Assist, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Drowsiness Alert, Semi-adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking.

Other features available include Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment systems with a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and offering phone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Multimedia Navi Pro additionally features European navigation with 3D view.
