Renault has unveiled its fully electric Mégane E-Tech Electric SUV; the first of a new generation of electric vehicles.

Showcased at the Munich Motor Show, the Mégane E-Tech Electric will be the first Renault to be built on the Alliance-developed CMF-EV platform, also being used for the Nissan Ariya.

It’s part of the Renaulution five-year strategic plan revealed at the start of the year, which will see Renault launch 14 core vehicles by 2025, of which seven will be fully electric.

Planned for production in Renault Group’s new ‘Made in ElectriCity’ industrial hub located in the north of France, it’s inspired by the Morphoz concept car in 2019 and previewed by the Mégane eVision show car in 2020.

It will be available with two battery capacities: 40kWh for a WLTP range of 186 miles and 60kWh for a range of up to 292 miles. Depending on the version, it will also be capable of fast 130kW charging, delivering 186 miles of range in just 30 minutes, and will eventually be able to use vehicle-to-grid tech to feed power back to the grid.

The motor will be offered in two guises – 130hp or 218hp – giving a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds.

Thanks to the new platform, the Mégane E-Tech Electric features an extended wheelbase of 2.7m, helping to deliver interior space similar to the ICE-powered Mégane, but with shorter front and rear overhangs.

The boot will have a total volume of 440 litres while the charging cables have their own 22-litre storage area accessible via a removable boot floor panel. Boot capacity can be increased with the rear seats folded down in a 60:30 format and the front passenger seat folded up.

The interior is dominated by the brand-new OpenR single screen, seen on concepts such as the TreZor in 2016 and combining the digital instrument panel and central console multimedia screen. It uses a 12.3-inch dashboard screen along with a 12-inch multimedia screen, built on Android Automotive OS with integrated Google services.

Arkamys sound systems will come as standard on the entry- and mid-level trims, while the top spec will come with a brand-new Harman Kardon top-of-the-line sound system.

Renault has also placed much focus on the vehicle’s overall sustainable credentials. All upholstery is made out of 100% recycled materials. And 95% of the vehicle will be recycled at the end of its life.

The brand also says the Mégane E-Tech Electric will bring a reinvented driving experience thanks to the new agile platform. Power steering is brand new and the Mégane E-Tech Electric has a lower centre of gravity compared to the Mégane ICE, while being more agile.

The Mégane E-Tech Electric will also come with 26 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that include Active Driver Assist with level 2 vehicle autonomy, combining adaptive cruise control with ‘Stop & Go’ and lane keeping assist. Other ADAS tech includes the  smart speed limiter, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, rear automatic emergency braking and occupant safe exit, which warns an occupant of an approaching vehicle, motorcycle, or cyclist as they open a car door, in order to avoid a collision.

Drivers can also use the Around View Monitor 3D to aid parking while the Full Auto Park feature brings almost entirely autonomous manoeuvres.

The Mégane E-Tech Electric launches late 2022.
