A new 16d engine, a 2.0-litre unit with 114bhp, will join the 3 Series Saloon and Touring ranges, again delivering fuel economy improvements. With this engine, the 316d Saloon returns 3.9l/100km and emits 102g/km, or 4.0 and 106g/km in the Estate.

For the 4 Series, the diesel line-up will grow to include an entry-level 18d unit with 148bhp, returning 4.0l/100km and emitting 106g/km in the Coupe and Gran Coupe when equipped with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Revisions to the 20d unit in the 4 Series have boosted power to 188bhp, while fuel economy has lifted to 4.0l/100km and 106g/km in the Coupe and Gran Coupe.

Three-cylinder engines for the 2 Series will include the 214d Active Tourer, a 95bhp unit which takes the MPV down to 99g/km and lifts economy to 3.8l/100km. The 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, meanwhile, get a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, offering up to 5.1l/100km with CO2 emissions of 119g/km, as well as xDrive four-wheel drive as a 113g/km option for the 220d.
