Previewed in a series of teaser images, the all-new vehicle was previously known under its J100 project name and takes the Torres designation from a national park in Patagonia.

The name is intended to reflect a sense of adventure, reinforced by the brand’s new design philosophy ‘Powered by Toughness’.

The new SUV will sit between the Korando and Rexton large SUV and is intended to create a new segment in the market.

A spokesperson for SMC commented: “The SUV market continues to expand and subdivide, and with Torres we are filling the gap between semi-medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and large SUVs like Rexton. This move will create an additional segment in the market and will open up new opportunities for us, especially as we further develop the product offering and continue to add value and originality.”

Torres is scheduled to go into mass production with pre-order sales commencing in June for South Korea.

It will arrive in Europe as an EV-only version, project name U100, towards the end of 2023.
