Toyota and Nissan recall 6.5 million cars over airbag issue
The news marks the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of the Takata airbag crisis.
Toyota announced a recall of just under five million cars covering 35 models whilst the Nissan recalls covers about 1.56 million cars.
As reported by AFP, Toyota said: “We have been conducting various ongoing investigations regarding Takata-produced airbag inflators.”
“Among the parts collected from the Japanese market, certain types of airbag inflators were found to have a potential for moisture intrusion over time. As a result, they could be susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash.”
Both carmakers said no accidents or injuries have been reported.
Issues with the Takata inflators have already led to around 25 million vehicle recalls across the globe since 2008 and have been linked to at least five deaths.
