Toyota bZ4X gains more power and range in new updates

Toyota has equipped its bZ4X electric SUV with faster charging, more power and extended driving range in a midlife refresh.

The brand’s first EV, launched back in summer 2022, now offers two battery options, including 57.7kWh and 73.1kWh packs, compared to the previous 71.4kWh unit.

The 57.7kWh battery will be exclusive to the front-wheel drive bZ4X; the 73.1kWh unit will be available in both front- and all-wheel drive versions.

Maximum WLTP range is expected to be 356 miles, depending on grade and powertrain; up from 317 for the current version.

At the same time, upgrades to the electric motors deliver more power, with up to 343hp on tap, making the new bZ4X one of the most powerful Toyota models available in Europe outside the GR performance car range.

Three versions will be available, depending on the market. These include a pair of FWD models, one with the 57.7kWh battery and a 167hp front-mounted motor and the other with the larger battery and a 224hp m motor on the front axle, plus the AWD version with the 73.1kWh battery and a total 343hp. The all-wheel drive version’s towing capacity has been doubled, reaching 1,500kg.

The upgraded bZ4X also gains a new battery pre-conditioning function that improves charging performance in most conditions, along with a new 22kW AC onboard charger on higher-grade models; the maximum DC charging power remains 150kW.

There’s also updates to the exterior design, producing a sleeker, more elegant look with improved aerodynamics, while the interior has been fully updated with a new centre console for easy connection and use of digital devices, and a new instrument panel design, with a 14-inch multimedia screen fitted as standard.

Updates to the suspension settings and adjustments to the bodywork deliver lower noise and vibration levels and improved comfort and driving dynamics.

The new bZ4X is expected to arrive in the UK and European markets ahead of autumn. Details of the UK model range and specifications are still to be announced.
