Toyota teases 2022 Aygo X urban crossover ahead of November reveal
Toyota has given a teaser of its new Aygo X A-segment model, due 2022 and replacing the current Aygo city car.
It’s set to be revealed in early November and takes the form of a compact crossover, responding to changing demands in urban and suburban areas in Europe. This is referenced in its new name – the ‘X’ is pronounced ‘cross’ in line with the Yaris Cross compact SUV and Toyota’s other crossover models. The new name also reflects the criss-cross frontal styling adopted with the 2014 second-gen Aygo.
The new Aygo X will mark the company’s first full model change to be planned, designed and produced in Europe, through the Toyota Motor Europe development centre. Previously, the Aygo was developed in partnership with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 under a former Czech JV, which was discontinued prior to the PSA merger with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
While Peugeot and Citroën have reportedly said they’re axing their city cars due to stricter European emissions standards and profitability concerns, Toyota will be pushing on with a new brand-exclusive version of the Aygo, constructed on its New Global Architecture GA-B platform, first introduced with the new Yaris hatchback and used more recently for the new Yaris Cross.
The new Aygo X will be produced Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic’s Kolin plant and will be revealed in early November 2021.
