Toyota teases electric crossover with bZ Compact SUV Concept
Toyota has given an insight into a possible new electric crossover for its line-up with the reveal of the bZ Compact SUV Concept.
Unveiled at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the concept provides a glimpse into possible future expansion of the bZ ‘Beyond Zero’ sub-brand.
Similar in size to the current C-HR hybrid crossover, it features a futuristic look that “combines minimalism with a futuristic vitality”. This includes pushing the wheels out to the corners to create a powerful stance and also employing short overhangs and a narrowed-down cabin, serving a focus on aerodynamics.
Alongside its fully electric powertrain, the concept also uses low-impact, sustainable materials, such as seating made from plant-based and recycled materials, following the Beyond Zero theme.
The brand also talks of cutting-edge technologies, including an in-car personal assistant that connects driver and passengers with the vehicle through audio and lighting cues that move around the cabin, responding to requests or commands.
Earlier this year, Toyota Motor Corporation pledged to launch 30 battery electric models by 2030, supporting plans for Lexus to go 100% electric by 2035. President Akio Toyoda said the brands were targeting total global battery electric vehicle sales to reach 3.5 million by the end of the decade, underpinning the group’s carbon neutral plans. The plans significantly advance the previous target to have at least 15 BEVs by 2025.
Toyota also said it would spend more on battery development this year and has since committed to invest up to 730 billion yen (c. £4.5bn / €5.3bn) to produce batteries to meet growing demand for electric vehicles.
However, the carmaker is still keeping its options open on the powertrains of the future. Today’s statement said: “Through its Beyond Zero message, Toyota envisions a future in which carbon neutrality is achieved through the practical introduction of products with advanced, alternative fuel and zero emission powertrain technologies. Such a diverse, electrified portfolio will help propel the company towards its global goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.”
