Toyota is to introduce a new electric midsize SUV for Europe; the first in a new line-up of battery electric vehicles.

The new model, yet to be named, will be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform jointly developed with Subaru

The new model, yet to be named, will be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform jointly developed with Subaru, as announced two years ago. The platform, which will also be used for future vehicles including D-segment saloons and SUVs, is developed for modular use to cut development time and can accommodate front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, with a wide range of battery and electric motor capacities to suit different vehicle types.

The midsize SUV is being readied for production and will be manufactured at Toyota’s ZEV factory in Japan.

Koji Toyoshima, deputy chief officer, ZEV factory, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “Toyota will shortly take the next step in the roll-out of its forthcoming battery electric portfolio by first previewing an all-new mid-size SUV in the coming months. The versatility and flexibility of e-TNGA technology allows us to design and create vehicles that are not just battery electric but also exciting to drive and beautiful to look at.”

It’s one of a number of latest EV developments at Toyota, which has also recently confirmed that it’s launching electric versions of its Proace City and Proace City Verso commercial vehicles, providing a 136hp output and joining the Proace van and Verso electric vehicles from autumn 2021.
