Toyota unveils gasoline engines with improved thermal fuel efficiency

The new units use combustion and loss-reduction technologies from the carmaker’s dedicated hybrid engines and will be rolled out into new models ‘in the near future’. In total, 14 new engine variations will be introduced globally by 2015.

The units include a 1.3-litre gasoline engine that employs the Atkinson cycle technology from dedicated hybrid engines along with other new measures that, combined with idling stop and other functions, will lead to fuel efficiency gains of approximately 15 percent by comparison with current vehicles.

Meanwhile, there’s also a 1.0-litre engine jointly developed with Daihatsu that uses similar means to achieve a maximum fuel efficiency improvement of approximately 30% over current vehicles.

The carmaker did not say which vehicles would get the engines, but the first two units are expected to make into non-hybrid compact cars for the Japanese market, with variations to be used in hybrid models too.
