Vattenfall Network Solutions is introducing a new ‘Power-as-a-Service’ model to help UK fleets switch to electric vehicles.

Under its Power-as-a-Service model, Vattenfall Network Solutions will design, build, own and operate the charging facilities on behalf of the client

Developed to be cost-effective and low-risk, the model removes the need for businesses to own and maintain electrical infrastructure.

Instead, Vattenfall Network Solutions, a UK specialist in climate-smart high-voltage electric network infrastructure and part of Swedish company Vattenfall, takes on EV infrastructure products; designing, building, owning and operating the charging facilities on behalf of the client.

The end-to-end offer includes new or upgraded grid connections to support the additional power requirements of EV charging, new high-voltage electrical infrastructure or upgrades to existing networks, and the EV charge points themselves.

Vattenfall adds that the model supports a full range of EV charging technology; as a ‘technology-agnostic’ expert, Vattenfall is not tied into any particular tech.

The Network Solutions team will also manage the complete process of setting up and running the EV charging infrastructure and the Vattenfall will provide agreed service levels, fixed costs and managing all compliance and regulatory issues over fixed term contracts, of up to 10 years.

Importantly, Vattenfall also guarantees the charging infrastructure will function as expected – this differs from standard practices at operation and maintenance companies.

And for companies that require new or upgraded grid connections, independent distribution network operator Vattenfall IDNO complements Vattenfall Network Solutions by providing grid connections to support electric vehicle charging. Unlike Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Vattenfall IDNO can provide Asset Adoption Value Payments, to help cover the additional costs of establishing electric vehicle charging.

It’s a model that’s already been tried and tested in other European countries. Same-day delivery company Red je Pakketje has partnered with Vattenfall Network Solutions for its EV charging setups at multiple locations in the Netherlands.

The work by Vattenfall to support the UK transport sector’s switch to electric vehicles comes on the back of its investment of more than £3.5bn in UK renewable energy generation.
