Built in Hanover, the latest model follows in big footsteps – its predecessor sold some 2 million units around the world within 11 years. And the full model series has sold around 12 million vehicles in 65 years.

On this basis, VW admits that the design has been “modernised cautiously” but brings a revised front end with a new grille and headlights.

As well as the commercial vehicle, the range includes the Multivan model aimed at families and outdoor sports enthusiasts and the Caravelle, which targets both commercial and private use and is now for the first time available as a Highline model as well.

A revised and more fuel-efficient engine line-up sees a completely new generation of 2.0-litre TDI engines, designed for bespoke commercial vehicle needs. Engines are transversely mounted and angled forwards by eight degrees and come with 84PS, 102PS, 150PS and 204PS.

There’s also a 2.0-litre petrol delivering either 150PS or 204PS.

All engines have a stop/start system as standard and, according to VW, bring a 15% reduction in fuel consumption on average.

The new model also brings new adaptive chassis control, Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC), which enables the vehicle to be adapted to three driving modes: comfort, normal and sport.

Other features include, depending on model, an automatic closing aid for the tailgate with a new, completely electrically operated version. 

Safety systems see the addition of the 'Front Assist' area monitoring system – optional for the Transporter, Multivan and Caravelle and standard on the Multivan Business – which uses adaptive cruise control and can warn the driver of impending crashes and, in combination with the DSG, can also slow the vehicle down, for example in queues or traffic jam situations, to a complete stop.

The system also features the City Emergency Braking function, which provides assistance at low speeds of under 30kph and automatically brakes if it senses a crash. This is also combined with Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which is provided as standard in the Transporter. Meanwhile the 'Driver Alert System', which is standard in vehicles with a multifunction display, recognises any deviations from normal driving behaviour and recommends the driver takes a break. 

For all vehicles with 4MOTION, Hill Descent Assist is available as an option.

The new model goes on order within the next few days. Prices have been announced for Germany and will be on a par with the previous model or lower. Prices for the Transporter start at €23,035 (plus value added tax for the 84PS TDI), while the Multivan starts at €29,952 for the Multivan Conceptline with 84PS TDI (incl. value added tax). The previous Startline entry-level model is replaced by the upgraded Trendline trim level at a price of €34,301 (gross).
