Volvo to offer integrated Google Maps app

Volvo will integrate apps including Google Maps into its next-generation infotainment system, as the carmaker moves to Android software.

Volvo Cars Android Sensus

Volvo’s Sensus system will move to Android software.

Due for launch within a couple of years, the next version of Sensus will be based on Google’s Android operating system, offering over-the-air updates similar to a mobile phone or tablet.

This will also introduce the Google Play Store, and apps including Google Maps with its real-time traffic information and more regularly updated maps, plus Google Assistant voice control for media and in-car functions.

Volvo Cars is also beginning trials of new technology which will anonymously share vehicles’ location data when hazard warning lights are engaged. This will be tested in Sweden and Norway, with cars sharing aggregated data with a third-party company for the first time – in this case, former sister brand, Volvo Trucks – to forewarn drivers about hazards ahead.
