Audi has confirmed the return of the A2, reborn as an entry-level all-electric compact car.

The compact all-electric A2 e-tron will debut in the autumn as Audi’s new entry point

Arriving from autumn 2026, 21 years after the original was discontinued, the A2 e-tron “will further rejuvenate Audi’s model range and open up access to premium electric mobility” as the brand’s smallest EV yet.

Slated to replace the combustion-engine A1 and Q2, the new model is expected to start around £30k (c. €35k).

Previewed with just a design sketch of its outline, the vehicle is under wraps for now but the teaser image indicates a modern reimagining of the original ‘one-box’ silhouette with a crossover-hatchback profile.

Audi confirmed at its 2026 annual media conference that the model will use the MEB+ platform, which also underpins the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and facelifted Cupra Born, and will be manufactured at its German headquarters in Ingolstadt. It will likely offer battery sizes similar to the VW ID.3, ranging from 58kWh to 79kWh and could have up to 400 miles of range.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said: “We’ve listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that – efficient, compact and confident. We’re making entry into the electric Audi world easier and more relevant than ever.”

Marking a “new chapter in the compact premium segment”, the A2 e-tron will target “a broad international customer base that values everyday usability in the city, sustainability, high efficiency and digital connectivity”.

The name pays a deliberate nod to the radical aerodynamic streamlining of its early-2000s predecessor, which pioneered efficiency and urban mobility over 25 years ago. The new A2 e-tron “carries this mission forward into the electric age”.

The A2 e-tron bolsters the brand’s model initiative and “strengthens a younger, clearer and increasingly electric portfolio and makes entering the brand more modern and more relevant for new target groups”.

After debuting more than 20 new models in 2024 and 2025, Audi lays claim to the youngest portfolio among the competition – from the fully electric compact segment to the premium full-size segment.

For 2026, Audi is bookending its lineup by launching two strategic extremes: the flagship Q9 SUV at the top end and the compact all-electric A2 e-tron as its new entry point.

A full world premiere of the Audi A2 e-tron is scheduled for autumn 2026, with sales expected to begin in early 2027.
