Located on Detmoldstrasse, the station is part of the European HyFIVE project, which is bringing five car manufacturers together with hydrogen stakeholders to conduct research and set standards across Italy, Denmark, Austria, Germany and the UK.

Munich is one of five sites in the project’s South Cluster, which also includes Stuttgart, Munich and Bolsano. Installed by TOTAL, it supports not only the 700-bar CGH2 filling standard, but the cryo-compressed hydrogen storage technology developed by project stakeholder BMW.

By storing the hydrogen gas at a low temperature and pressure up to 350 bar, this CCH2 standard is said to offer 50% more capacity than the CGH2 technology allows. The site in Munich gives BMW a refuelling station to research hydrogen fuel cells in its collaborative project with Toyota, ahead of a market launch in 2020.

Matthias Klietz, head of powertrain research at BMW Group, said: “This new form of mobility, based on hydrogen, offers private and commercial users zero-local-emission long-distance electric mobility with no concessions on comfort, space and refuelling times.”
